NOTES
Etheldred Jordan Tarver, Sr. was born 1780 in Dobbs County, North Carolina to Samuel Tarver and Celia Jordan, one of three known children. Known siblings were Robert Tarver, who married Mason (nee) Tarver (the d/o John Tarver & Elizabeth Jordan), and Samuel Bennett Tarver who married Charlotte Arnold (nee) Tarver (also a d/o John Tarver & Elizabeth Jordan). It is speculated (unconfirmed) that Sarah Tarver, who died before 1860 in Crawford Co., Georgia is a sister.
Etheldred J. Tarver married Mary Nancy Robinson, the d/o John Robinson of Ireland. Both he and his wife, Nancy, are buried in the Tarver Family Cemetery, about two miles out of Blythe, Georgia (Grave Markers in Burke Co., Georgia). There were seven known children of their union.
- Isabella Tarver m. Benjamin Palmer
- Samuel Augustus Tarver m. Frances Augusta Vallotton
- Sarah Tarver m. Francis Stephen Vallotton
- John Robinson Tarver m. Elizabeth Shaw
- Robert Ruffin Tarver m. Ava Smith
- Etheldred Jordan Tarver, Jr. m. Harriet Jane McNair
- Maria Nancy Tarver m. John Dillard
Coming to Georgia shortly after the Revolutionary War, Etheldred was the first of the Tarvers to settle in Richmond County, Georgia. He appears on the tax list for Richmond County in 1797, as does Jacob Tarver. The 1805 Georgia Land Lottery, held in 1803-04, shows Etheldred, married, and Jacob, single, registering in Washington County. His brothers, Robert and Samuel B. (both single) registered in Burke County, as did his mother, Celia, a widow with minor children (names not known).
Prominant in local affairs, Etheldred's name is found on numerous deeds and records in the archives of Richmond County. He is said to have accumulated much of his land thru the purchase of land grants from Native American Indians. He resided until his death on his plantation near the present towns of Blythe and Bath.
