NOTES
I am unaware of any proof connecting THIS William Tarver of St. Mary's Parish, Maryland and our line of Tarvers, although I am convinced our line descends from one William Tarver. If this is our William Tarver, then the dates for our Thomas Tarver need to be revised, as William Tarver's wife, Elizabeth, did not join him in Maryland until five years had passed. Her passage is recorded in 1665, while William's is recorded in 1650 (Skordas).1 We lose track of this William and Elizabeth Tarver after Elizabeth arrives from England. Elizabeth did not bring an infant child with her; she sailed alone to St. Mary's Parish, as did William. If they are our Thomas' parents, Thomas could not have been born in 1640, else he did not immigrate with them.
Thomas first appears on a list of tithables in Surry County, Virginia in 1688, so we know he is taxable as an adult by this year. Prior to that year, he is brought into court for indebtedness to Captain Hugh Campbell (see below), and ordered to pay. In June 1694, he is tithed with one Thomas Nicholson, who later sues his father-in-law, Thomas Torver, for unkind treatment. Thomas Tarver is tithed alone in 1698. In 1702, he is tithed with his son, Samuel Tarver, Southwark Parish, Surry County, Virginia (Boddie).
While on a research jaunt in Virginia, mother and I were lucky enough to run upon an out-of-the-way book store that speacialized in out-of-print materials, antique books and old newspapers. There we found and purchased a collection of old Surry County Court Books,2 from which I transcribe the following: Surry County, Va Court Records,2 B4, Pt Jan 1862 - Pt 1691 (1) p.694. Thomas TORVER conf jud to Hugh CAMPBELL. (2) B4, p.694 -- Ex. 10?th. Tho. TORVER being indebted to Capt. Hugh CAMPBELL by bill four hundred forty Eight pds. of of tobo. & Caske, Came into Court & confessed Judgemt for ye. same It is therefore ordrd. that the sd. TORVER pay ye. said four hundred fourty eight pds. of tobo. & Caske to ye. sd. CAMPBELL with Costs als. Exce. (3) B5, p.193: 7br. 1697 --
Tho. NICHOLAS appeareing at this Court & complaineing of the ill & bad usuage he receives from his ffather in Law Thomas Thomas TORVER and it appeareing, It is ordered that the said NICHOLAS have the benifitt of his Labour for the future. [N.B. "Thomas" is struck through and then reprinted with no change.]
