 | BIBLE RECORD: Roberson TarverBurke County, Georgia, 1825-1890 The Roberson Tarver Bible is owned by Ed Holmes, Sandersville, Ga. LDS microfilm no. 329970. There are in the registry of this Bible three handwriting scripts. Almost all entries are by the first script. Four entries in a second script and two entries by a third script.
There also is an additional page with just a few entries. These may be a fourth script, or they may be the same as the second script, just more neatly written. The final death entry appears to most closely match the second script.

Note: The notation to the top right of the entries on this page is in a different handwriting than the recorded events on the page. The notation appears designed to identify Robert Goldsmith as Uncle Bob. Two entries on this page closely match script no.2 from the registry. The others resemble script 2 from the register but are much more neatly written. I'm not sure if these are two handwriting scripts or one. They definitely differ from the the script in which most entries are recorded in the Bible register. My guess is the son, Roberson Goldsmith Tarver, assumed ownership of the Bible. He then reentered his own birth along with that of his wife, Sarah Redd, on a different page, where he also recorded his marriage date and the birth and death of his son. Else his wife Sarah Redd may have recorded these entries for her family.

Obituary of Mark TarverFather of Roberson Tarver (above) - transcribed by Nancy Lorey for Tarver-Gen. "The somewhat idiosyncratic capitalization is
in the original." Note: At the top of this clipping the print says "Transmitted for the Chronicle & Sentinal"
OBITUARY.
On the 8th of May 1849, at his residence in Burke County, Ga., Mr. Mark Tarver, aged about 70 years, leaving a wife and eleven children.
Mr. Tarver was a native of Barnwell District, S.C. He came to and settled in Burke county, some 3 years after the close of the war of 1812, in which he served with the militia of his native State, when their services were required to defend the sea-board.
Although bred a farmer, he was mostly engaged in mechanical pursuits. His principal business was that of a Millwright and Blacksmith, and he was a good workman in each branch. He was a self-made mechanic, and had he possessed the advantages of many others, would have been a superior workman in both branches.
He was a kind husband, a tender parent and an obliging neighbor. He was a great friend to persons in needy circumstances, and has been known to board such for months without expecting or receiving any compensation whatever.
It was said by the clergyman who attended his funeral "that his house had been as a hospital for the poor." He was one of nature's noblemen, his heart was imbued with a large share of philanthr! opy and good feeling toward all with whom he associated or with whom he transacted business. He was not a professor of religion, but it is supposed that he died a christian. He has gone from amongst us "to that bourn from whence no traveler returns" -- is no more subject to the physical and moral infirmities of this life, and we trust, what is a great loss to his family and friends, is to him an unspeakable and eternal gain.
Note - Confirm the following speculations based upon census enumerations before incorporating into your data.
According to the above obituary, Mark Tarver was the father of eleven children. He is said to have married twice. The first time in North Carolina, by whom he had at least one child and possibly three. The second time in Georgia to Sarah Greenway.
According to her application for bounty land, based upon Mark's military service, Sarah Greenway (wife of above Mark Tarver) and her husband, Mark Tarver, were married on 14 Nov 1819 in Burke Co., Georgia.
Despite Sarah's declaration and the obituary which indicates his arrival in Georgia at least as early as 1818, there is no enumeration for the family of Mark Tarver in Burke county, Georgia for the year 1820 (Families of Burke co 1755-1855 A Census, by Davis & Lucas).
1820 Census index for Georgia shows the following Tarver's as hh:
- -- Burke Co., Georgia: Samuel B. Tarver.
- -- Hancock Co.: Absalem.
- -- Jefferson Co.: Mary.
- -- Jones Co. Elisha.
- -- Putnam Co.: Benjamin.
- -- Richmond Co.: Etheldred, J.M., and S.
- -- Warren Co.: Mary.
- -- Washington Co.: Frederick and Robert.
- -- Wilkes Co.: Andries (possibly Andrew), Benjamin, Hartwell H., Jacob, John, Richard, and William M.Tarver.
The 1830 census in the 65th district of Burke County shows the family of Mark Tarver with 11 white individuals. Seven males are enumerated besides Mark, and two girls plus one older female, presumed to be the wife. Assuming the household represents a family unit, the census indicates three sons already of age, all of which would have been born some years prior to Mark's marriage with Sarah Greenway.
Mark Tarver household. 1830, Burke Co., Georgia, 65th Dist., roll no. M19_16, p.136.

1 female 30-40 - (1790-1830) - Wife, Sarah Greenway
To my knowledge, only John N. and Oliver G. are born to Mark and Sarah after the 1830 census enumeration. Given these computations, there appears to have been at least 3 children born to Mark by his first wife and already out of the household.
Of his marriage with Sarah, Mark's children appear to be:
- Caroline Tarver who marr Oliver Hazard Perry Byne
- Thomas Tarver who married Frances Emeline Clark
- Roberson Tarver who marr Florence Anly Burdich
- Mark A. Tarver who marr Elizabeth A Tarver
- John N. Tarver who married ___ Malone

Also on the 1830 Burke County, Georgia census are the households of Allen Tarver, Robert Tarver (both on roll no. M19_16, p.138), and of Noah Tarver (roll no. M19_16, p.136). Allen's household is comprised of one male 10-19, one male 20-29, two males 30-39, no females; six total. Robert's household is comprised of one male under 5, one male 10-14, one male 20-29, and one female 30-39; four total.
In the 1840 census, Mark's family consist of 10 indivuduals.
Mark age 40-50, and
6 males under 16.
Two females below 15, and
1 female between 30 and 40 (Mark's wife, Sarah).
By 1850 Mark is deceased and the household is enumerated with Sarah as head of household.

Tarver, son of Mark Tarver (Sr.) and Sarah Greenway. Mark and Elizabeth were living in Texas at the time of her mother's will (13 Jan. 1853). Roberson Tarver's household is no.187-187.
