Mrs. E.J. Raiford, born Pike County, 4 April 1833; died Gloster on 01 July 1900; wife of Honorable William B. Raiford, who preceded her to the "beautiful beyond." Left children and grandchildren
William Bethea Raiford Gloster, Amite County, Mississippi
(7/5/1888) Raiford, Wm. B., died at Gloster, Amite Co., Mississippi, 24 May 1888, in his 59th yr.; born Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina, moved to Pike County, Miss., in 1850; married. Jane Tarver, dau. of Elijah Tarver of Amite Co., on 27 December 1853; became merchant in Amite Co. (long article about his career).
From the Magnolia Gazette (Pike Co., Reel MG-4) "26 May 1888 - Honorable W.B. Raiford died Wednesday night the 23rd."
NOTES
Elzara Jane was the daughter of Rev. Elijah Lovett Tarver and Elizabeth Powell, and the granddaughter of Allen Tarver & Elizabeth Cockerham and Josiah Powell & Janet Brixey.
According to her marriage license (copied at Liberty Courthouse, Amite Co.) Miss Elzara Jane Tarver and William Bethea Raiford were married on 18 January 1854. (This license also copied at Liberty, in Amite County.)
Jane Tarver and Wm. B. Raiford are buried beside one another in the Gloster Cemetery in Gloster, Amite Co. Two Raiford, Edwin E. and Jane, are buried at Liberty Cemetery, in Liberty, Amite Co., Ms. These are very likely their children as the inscriptions say: "s/o" and "dau of W B & E J Raiford". Photographs of these stones will be posted at this Web site, www.tarver-genealogy.net, in The Cemetery Grounds section.
In its notes, Amite County Cemeteries 1 lists Eliza Jane Tarver, the daughter of Wilson Tarver (of SC) and Melinda (of Georgia), as being married to William Raiford. I believe the notation in the cemetery book to be in error, as Eliza Jane Tarver (d/o Wilson) married William J. Travis on 17 December 1851 in Amite Co., Ms.
On the 1870 census of Amite Co., William Raiford and family are shown as living "Between Osyka Rd & State Line." Also in this section is Allen Tarver, wife Julia, and child, Thomas N. This family, the only TARVER family in the section, is Julia Muse and William Allen Tarver, the son of Rev. Elijah Tarver.
Another of Elijah Tarver's children, Mary Elizabeth, married into the Butler family of Amite County (George Harrison Butler). This family of Butlers named one son Elijah Tarver Raiford and another Josiah Powell Butler, for Mary Elizabeth's father and grandfather. Another son was named William Raiford Butler, indicating a close relationship with the Wm. Raiford family. Other children were also namesakes of previous family members.
I believe the Elzara Jane Tarver who married William Bethea Raiford was the daughter of Rev. Elijah Lovett Tarver and Elizabeth Powell, while the Eliza Jane Tarver, who married William J. Travis, is the daughter of Wilson Tarver (of SC) and Melinda (of Georgia). I believe the obituaries reprinted from the "Magnolia Gazette", and written concurrently with their deaths to be the accurate lineage, while an error was made in the Amite County Cemeteries book by Mogan & Mogan, written in 1982, long years after the deaths of both of these couples.
