Rev. P. McManus, Age 80, Dies At his Home In Verda
Interment Held Sunday Afternoon in Mars Hill Cemetery
Rev. P. McManus, age 80, pioneer Baptist preacher of the section died at his home in Verda Saturday, August 11th, at 7:30 a.m. Funeral services were held from the Mars Hill Baptist Church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Re. O. L. Hughes, Baptist minister conducted last rites. Burial was made in the Mars Hill Cemetery.
Surviving members of the immediate family are five sons, G.P. McManus, S.L. McManus, Gravis McManus and Lane McManus of Atlanta, Louisiana, Route 2 and Vincent McManus of Port Arthur, Texas; four daughters, Mrs. Minnie Johnston, Mrs. Dink Lovett of New Verda, Mrs. Herd of Epps and Mrs. G.R. Tarver of Winnfield; two half brothers, R.M. Lang of Atlanta and Monroe Lang of Verda.
Rev. McManus came of the sturdy stock that help(ed) to make history in this section during pioneer days. He was a school teacher, a preacher and farmer and in all situations wielded an influence for honest dealings and righteous living. A large number of friends and relatives paid their last tribute of respect by attending the funeral Sunday afternoon.

Prof. P. McManus Dies Following Second Stroke
Was Historian and Widely Known As An Entertainer
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for Prof. P. McManus who died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. I. P. Lovette December 11th at 7 a.m. after a second stroke of paralysis.
Services were conducted by Rev. Otto Hughes with interment in the Mars Hill Cemetery. Edmonds Funeral Home directed the burial.
Mr. McManus was born in Alabama, September 21, 1857 and came to Louisiana when very young, living in Winn Parish the remainder of his life.
He died a member of the Mars Hill Baptist Church and it is said by those who knew him for many years to have possessed the greatest memory of any self educated man in this vicinity.
Prof. McManus is widely known because of his ability to entertain others with history that few men could relate.
Aside from his learning he had great faith in the creator's provision for a further life as taught in the Bible. His last feeble request to his children was "that they put their trust in Him who was able to save," and he related the words of the song of hope, "There Is A Deep Silent River Flowing From The Throne With Its Waters Dark And Wide, And By Faith We See A Light, Yes A Beacon Light, Just Across On The Other Side."
Surviving are four daughters and five sons. They are Mrs. Massie Heard, Epps, La.; Mrs. Minnie Johnson, Verda; Mrs. I.P. Lovette, Verda; Mrs. Russell Tarver, Winnfield; Mr. Lance McManus, Atlanta; V.C. McManus, Port Arthur; G.P. McManus, S. L. McManus, Travis McManus, all of Atlanta, Route Two. Thirty six grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren also survive.
Active pallbearers were Wade McManus, Winnfield; Albert Walsworth, Atlanta; Plez McManus, Epps; Alvan Dyson, ___; George B. Tyson, ___ and Crockett Lov______.

P. McManus was the father of Bernice McManus Tarver. Bernice McManus was the wife of George Russell Tarver, born 27 Feb 1898 in Rapides Parish, La. George Russell Tarver is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Pineville, La. He was the s/o Marion Crawford Tarver & Adeline Jolly, and grandson of Russell Marion Tarver and Aletha Ann Minerva Wilson. Russell Marion Tarver was s/o Samuel Wilson Tarver and Mary Ann Lilly.
