Obituary: Alexandria Daily Town Talk, 26 April 1999

Services for Callie Wright Tarver will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Hixson Bros., Pineville, with the Rev. Bill Broadwater officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Pineville. Mrs. Tarver, 97, of Alexandria died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in Naomi Heights Nursing Home. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Pineville, and of Willing Workers Sunday school class.

Survivors include two sons, Reginald Wright of Austin, Texas, and Steve Walker Tarver Jr. of Pineville; three daughters, Carolyn Jones, Eileen Drerup and Nell Guillot, all of Alexandria; one sister, Mary Hathorn of Poland, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

NOTES

Mrs. Callie Wright married Steve Walker Tarver, Sr. He was the son of Henry Walker Tarver, who was the son of John Houston Tarver Sr. of Catahoula Par., Louisiana. Many of the John Houston Tarver line are buried at Rosefield and Welcome Home Cemeteries. They are thought to be descended from James Tarver of Jefferson Co., Georgia.

John Houston "Jack" Tarver, Sr. b 23 Jan 1814 Miss died July 1902 in Rosefield, Catahoula Par., Louisiana. He married on 18 May 1848 (in Marion Co. Mississippi) Ethea Jane Duke, the daughter of Elizabeth Parting and Simeon Duke, Jr. who married on 15 May 1826 in Marion Co., Mississippi. Jack and Jane Duke are buried in the Duke or Old Luther Hayes Cemetery. There are no headstones.

John Houston Tarver, Sr.'s parents were born in North Carolina. It is believed that his father is James Tarver who along with Sterling Simon Tarver was in Lawrence Co., Ms and who came there from Jefferson Co., Georgia. This relationship is not proven.

Known siblings of John H Tarver are

  • Rebecca, who married (1) Waid Odom 13 May 1841 (2) John Lisenby
  • Martha, who married Benjamin C Wilson 24 October 1839
  • Sarah, who married Francis Berry
  • Elizabeth, who married Martin A. Smith 26 September 1850
  • Wiley Rawls Tarver, Sr. who married Eliza Ann Bass April 10, 1851
  • James Tarver, Jr., who married Lydia Rouse August 1848

They were all married in Catahoula Parish.

Probably a sibling is Hillsman Tarver, who was enumerated as overseer in the 1850 household of James Bowie in Catahoula Parish. John H "Jack" Tarver named one of his sons Hillman, probably after Hillsman, whose name may also have been Hillman, but misrecorded by the census taker. (1850 Catahoula Par. LA, hh 77-77, Hillsman Tarver, 31M, Overseer, Mississippi)

Possibly a sibling is Sterling Simon Tarver who married Mary Ann Brown and went to Chester, Tyler Co., Texas. The relationship with these final two, Hillsman and Sterling, is not proven.
