Parent Yours
To My Son, Charles ... on leaving home

I see the things our hearts
    were put into
Waylaid with dust and rust
    forgotten, too.

A garden hose hanger,
    Made specially by you,
With pride and zeal
    As young ones new things do.

There's no one near
    to waller on the lawn;
A lonesome dog
    don't know why you are gone.

Silent night, no laughter,
    song or fuss.
I bite my heart and eat;
    Or is this dust?

How cruel is life
    to give and take away.
Perhaps, my son,
    I've lived too long this day.
