Letter to sister,
Herminia Cirilo
My dear sister Mina,
The following is an old letter that I found in my files. I do not know if I ever mailed it or not so here it is again (?)
June 1989
Mina, I am writing you by the light of a kerosene lamp. It has been a while since we did our school work in such pleasant humility. In this light we were nurtured and to this I have returned without apprehension. Attitude is to be commented. No greater gift is there to man than that which turns the ebb of life to love ... for his soul will keep the truth of your heart as the taste of church wine is remembered when the color is forgotten and the temple is no more. We are still here but life behooves the memory of school buildings long returned to the earth. This will remind you of Parks, Texas and our childhood of long ago. Then again of La Villa, Texas and the Weslaco area.
Winter came and we burned wood in a home made heater. Actually a fifty gallon barrel with stove pipes going into a brick chimney. It has iron legs, and a hinged door on one end. I can almost put half a tree in it. Made it myself.
This we did to let our youngest daughter live in our house in Houston. They had no job, nothing. Also I was recovering from a heart stroke that left me with only one useful arm. It happened where you last saw us working.
... 1991 ...
Today I am thankful for a lot of prayer that now finds me in perfectly good health. I am writing you on my own computer which is not entirely paid for but enjoyable. I want you and Cuco to come stay with us a while. The country air is restful out here in the vicinity of Tyler, Texas.
We are working on the building of a new shed and on the house also since it is a very old house. Only the yard is beautiful and the six acres across the bending slopes to the back of our home.
We want you to know that we love you very much, as always.
We appreciate the gifts that you sent for Christmas. It was not necessary but ever so generous, and a beautiful gesture.
Lovingly Yours, Chal
