He worked hard and his skills andcraftsmanship were sought by many people in the area. 2 CONT 2 CONT Grandpa and grandma moved their family into the old school house at Bladebefore WWII. Grandp 2 CONC a, Uncle Jay and Uncle Alvin went to work loggingtrees behind the old school house and makin 2 CONC g cross ties. They had an oldmule dragging the logs out of the woods. The mule hated Uncl 2 CONC e Jay, mamasaid, and would stomp his feet every time he came around. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mama said grandpa took the rubber tire off of one side of the back of hisflatbed truck in ord 2 CONC er to attach a large circle saw he used to cut hiscross ties with. He jacked the truck up an 2 CONC d cranked it to use the axleto turn the saw blade. Come Saturday morning, they would put th 2 CONC e tireback on to use the truck to take the finished cross ties into Jena.Gross and Janes (som 2 CONC e lumber company) came by every weekend to grade andpurchase the ties. When Uncle Jay and Un 2 CONC cle Alvin were drafted intoWWII, mama helped grandpa with the cross ties. 2 CONT 2 CONT The first vehicle they ever owned was one grandpa Johnny built, mamasaid. Grandpa gathered p 2 CONC arts from numerous old wrecks and people frommiles around would bring him parts. He stuffe 2 CONC d some old flat tires withwet burlap bags to keep them 'inflated.' He used tin cans to mak 2 CONC e themuffler, tying them with wire through holes he had bored with his hammerand nails. The 2 CONC y called it a FORD, since the radiator still had itsoriginal emblem, altho the parts came fro 2 CONC m any kind of vehicle as well asmakeshift items. This was at Goodpine and during the depress 2 CONC ion. Tom Mayo received Holy Ghost under Johnny's ministr 2 CONC yat Rawsin Creek. 2 CONT 2 CONT Johnny Tarver established and built several churches in the area; themost notable at the ol 2 CONC d Webb Logging Camp site near Manifest in CatahoulaParish. Established about 1946, in 1993 2 CONC , this church was still active. 2 CONT 2 CONT Grandpa also established and built the church at Rawson Creek a few milesnorth of Harrisonbur 2 CONC g in Catahoula Parish, which he left for Uncle Tom topastor. Johnny then founded the churc 2 CONC h at Birds Town, Carrier,Mississippi and afterwards went on to build the one at Tioga, Louisi 2 CONC ana. 2 CONT 2 CONT Grandpa built the church that he pastored behind the levee too. Mamasaid a minister named Ny 2 CONC meyer came through with his wife looking for aplace to hold a revival. He stayed about thre 2 CONC e weeks helping to buildthe church, and held revival the whole time he was there. It must ha 2 CONC vetaken all year or more to get the church like grandpa wanted, but theyheld services through 2 CONC out the work. 2 CONT 2 CONT Notations from grandma Marie's diary: On February 13, 1956: "Made mybrown dress Jay got me t 2 CONC oday. We used to fishand swim there. We'd dig worms out back o 2 CONC f grandpa's house and go downto the lake to catch our supper. My older sister, Elsie, woul 2 CONC d swim fromone bank to the other ... she was about the best swimmer I've everknown. We als 2 CONC o spent a great deal of time playing on the levee. We had manyfish fries up at grandma Lizzie's with famil 2 CONC y and all the folks from thechurch grandpa pastored back there. The church sat almost in gra 2 CONC ndmaLizzie's front yard. Grandpa Kelly, who was about the meanest manliving, would walk th 2 CONC e short distance down to grandma Marie's to sharetheir morning coffee on the front porch mos 2 CONC t mornings. For awhile, uncleJay and aunt PeeWee lived in a house across the street from gra 2 CONC ndma andgrandpa, and aunt Gladys and uncle Woodrow had a small trailer parked inthe yard betw 2 CONC een uncle Jay's place and grandpa's. 2 CONT 2 CONT I remember visiting once when someone brought a box of hand-me-downclothes to Patsy Joy, on 2 CONC e of aunt Gladys' girls. Patsy and I were in thetiny trailer and Patsy was trying on the dre 2 CONC sses. There was afull-length mirror attached to the door going from the living area to thebe 2 CONC droom. Patsy is about my brother 2 CONC Adrian's age, so she couldn't have been more than six or seven at thetime. We went on back t 2 CONC o the yard where she satwith her legs spread before her and filled the skirt tail of her 'new 2 CONC 'dress with dirt as we dug for worms. 2 CONT 2 CONT When I was small, daddy built a house behind the levee too. Mama and Ray had two girls together, my eldestsisters, Ronnie and Elsie. Ray spent som 2 CONC e time in the service while theywere married and mama went with him to where he was statione 2 CONC d atPetersburg, Virginia. Mama said Ray was the happiest man she'd everseen, always full o 2 CONC f laughter. 2 CONT 2 CONT Once, when mama was helping him drive a couple of old log trucks, itwasn't being a good day f 2 CONC or her. The old truck she was driving wasmissing the gear shift stick and Ray had stuck a bi 2 CONC g screwdriver throughthe truck floor to shift with. Grease was flying everywhere and mamasai 2 CONC d she was greasy and she was mad. Ray Green hauled her out of thetruck and carried her dow 2 CONC n to the creek and threw her in, laughing allthe way. Ray was a philanderer though, and mam 2 CONC a learned the hard way. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mama was in the hospital having Elsie when Ray's latest girlfriend wasjust across the hall ha 2 CONC ving another child for him. Mama received bothbirth certificates from the hospital, one fo 2 CONC r Elsie Mae and the secondfor Wanda Faye. Turned out Ray had told mama and the other girl, w 2 CONC ho wasjust a 14 year old kid, that he was working shift work on a swing shift. If he told mam 2 CONC a he was working nights, he'd spend nights with WandaFaye's mama, and vice versa. Actually 2 CONC , he wasn't working at all. He wasdrawing an unemployment check and his mama was cashing i 2 CONC t and taking thecash to my mama to handle the bills. The other girl was living atgrandma Gre 2 CONC ene's house and Ray was sleeping with her there. GrandmaGreene never told mama, but later Ra 2 CONC y's sisters told mama that he'd beenrunning around all the time. It was a habit he never out 2 CONC grew. BothElsie and Ronnie were named after other girlfriends. Ray has a son,Johnny Ray, wh 2 CONC o works at the funeral home in downtown Jena. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mama said she never lived with Ray after that, those she and Ray were notdivorced for severa 2 CONC l more years. Rays sister's traveled with mama on hertrip back to Louisiana to stay with he 2 CONC r family. On May 13, 1949 mama andgrandma Marie both wrote in their diary that the divorce w 2 CONC as final. Thedivorce papers state that the couple had been living apart for at least acoupl 2 CONC e of years. Ray didn't change much in later years. He had childrenby five different women 2 CONC . Years later, after we were all grown, my sisterDolly met another son of his, Johnny Ray Gr 2 CONC eene, who is a Pentecostalminister and works in Jena (LaSalle Parish). Johnny said he had se 2 CONC en hisdaddy only once in his life, when he was four years old. He wanted toplan a trip to me 2 CONC et him, he said, but did not know how to find him. Raydied 2 CONT 2 CONT Mama and my daddy, Charlie, were married at the courthouse in Houston,Texas in 1952. Mama ha 2 CONC d come to Houston with her daddy and her brothersto find work. Elsie and Ronnie were littl 2 CONC e and stayed home with grandmaMarie. Mama went to work for the Shamrock Hilton as a housekee 2 CONC per. TheShamrock was the plushest place in Houston about that time. Daddy was awaiter for t 2 CONC he Shamrock. He later said he told all the guys he workedwith he was going to marry mama whe 2 CONC n he first laid eyes on her. Howevermuch he wanted to marry her, he got cold feet on the da 2 CONC y of the wedding. He and mama were supposed to marry on her birthday but daddy chickenedout a 2 CONC s they climbing the courthouse steps. Mama said she cried allnight, so they went back the ne 2 CONC xt day and got married. Her birthday ison the 24th of April, and they were married on the 25 2 CONC th. They had sixchildren, and our habit has been to call us the 'six little kids,' sinceRonn 2 CONC ie and Elsie were older. 2 CONT 2 CONT Licensed as a midwife in three states (Texas, LA, MS), mama delivered 11children at home an 2 CONC d assisted with many other births. She delivered allfour of Lydia and Darlene's children 2 CONC . I wanted her to deliver mine, butthe doctors told me that midwives couldn't deliver childr 2 CONC en in NorthCarolina. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mama worked hard when we were growing up, with a house full of kids. With so many hungry littl 2 CONC e kids, mama canned a lot of groceries everyyear. We'd go up to Conroe and pick peas and she 2 CONC ll them for her to putup. We'd pick berries on the side of the road. We'd buy at the farmer 2 CONC 'smarket, or mama would put in a garden. Once mama and daddy bought 50grown chickens and mam 2 CONC a killed every one of them, wringing their necksand using the daddy's machete to hack their h 2 CONC eads off in our backyard atMonticello. The neighbors must have thought we were outrageous 2 CONC . Thechicken bodies were flapping their wings, headless, and some flew overthe chain link fe 2 CONC nce into the neighbor's yard. I was mortified, but mamaput up a lot of chicken stew that yea 2 CONC r. 2 CONT 2 CONT Like both her parents, mama was a Pentecostal preacher. She pastored asmall church on Almed 2 CONC a Genoa Road in south Houston for some time while wewere growing up. When she wasn't pastori 2 CONC ng, she was active in churchsomewhere, preaching in Anglo, Spanish and black Pentecostal chur 2 CONC ches:holiness, full-gospel, four-square -- if they worshipped God, weworshipped with them. W 2 CONC e'd travel to Louisiana to campmeetings andfellowship meetings, or attend the big tent reviva 2 CONC ls that came throughHouston. We'd go down to Corpus Christi with Sis. Costerina and mamawoul 2 CONC d preach in churches there. She was "chief cook and bottle washer"for more "dinners on the g 2 CONC round" than I can recall. When Bro. MackWatson, who pastored a church on Irvington, would b 2 CONC e out of town, healways left mama in charge of his services. In each church, we learnedthe u 2 CONC nique language of praise in their songs of worship: from Swing Low,Sweet Chariot to Cuando Cr 2 CONC isto Ven al Mundo Otro Vez to It Took a Miracleand How Great Thou Art. 2 CONT 2 CONT We were attending service regularly there and there was a tent revivalset up on his parking l 2 CONC ot when Lydia took sick and had to be admittedinto the hospital. The doctors said she had sc 2 CONC arlet fever and brightsdisease and wouldn't live, but mama and daddy just called for specialp 2 CONC rayer at church and believed for a miracle. 2 CONT 2 CONT Once mama died, when she was in Herman Hospital being operated on forcancer. They sewed mam 2 CONC a up, covered her with a sheet and wheeled herout. Daddy stroked out and wouldn't let them t 2 CONC ake her away. He saidthey'd already filled out her death certificate, but he got on the phon 2 CONC eto everyone he knew and told them he needed a miracle for mama. He saidhe didn't tell anyon 2 CONC e she had died. So some minutes later, when mamashould have been good and dead, she woke u 2 CONC p screaming no, no, no. Shesaid her mama had come to her to show her into heaven, but she' 2 CONC d beentelling her mama no, she couldn't go now, she had too many little babieswho needed her 2 CONC . Mama said grandma told her she'd be back when mama'sbabies didn't need her anymore. I can 2 CONC 't imagine when that might be. Allmy life, during difficult times, I heard only two words es 2 CONC cape mama'slips, almost a breath, almost not heard: "Ohhh, Jesus." In my turn, during the mos 2 CONC t difficult storms of my own life, with almost a breath youmight miss, you can hear me call 2 CONC : "Ohhh, mama, oh, my mama." 2 CONT 2 CONT Mama has lived with me since daddy's death. I can't imagine her dyingand leaving us to liv 2 CONC e our lives out without her being here. She's thecalm of our storms, the peacekeeper. No ma 2 CONC tter how sorry a person, mamaalways manages to have something positive to say about them. So 2 CONC me peoplehave a really good sense of humor; for others she has to stretch evenfurther to fin 2 CONC d something kind to say ... 2 CONT 2 CONT Mama's life has been both full of joy, and scattered with heartache, notthe least of which ha 2 CONC s been seeing two of her children pass before her,and losing daddy after so many years togeth 2 CONC er. For the first severalyears after daddy died, she did a lot of visiting on her own, drivi 2 CONC ng hervan to south Mississippi to see aunt Miggie and family there, or toHouston or Ferriday 2 CONC . These days we don't let her drive anymore. We haveto do some of her remembering for her 2 CONC , but, at 75 her health is stillgood. She's not on any medications or being treated for anyt 2 CONC hing. Itake her to spend time with the other kids, but I don't like to let herstay away to 2 CONC o long. I figure the other kids all have their lives full, and mama feels like she's visitin 2 CONC g when she's with them, but she feelslike she's home at our place. Daddy always said mama wa 2 CONC s a "go-go",meaning she always loved to go somewhere. So it doesn't take too manydays for ma 2 CONC ma to get ready to go visiting somewhere again. 1 SOUR @S27@ 0 @I404@ INDI 1 NAME James Robert /Tarver/ 2 GIVN James Robert 2 SURN Tarver 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 24 OCT 1928 2 PLAC Harrisonburg,Catahoula Par.,Louisiana 2 SOUR @S25@ 2 SOUR @S7@ 1 FAMC @F18@ 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Military 2 PLAC Army,Korean Conflict, dis 12/19/1952 2 SOUR @S14@ 1 NOTE James Robert Tarver, called Jimmy, served his tour of Armed Service forthe US in the states d 2 CONC uring the Korean Conflict.
