John Wesley Tarver on May 26, 1918 in Jonesville, Catahoula Par.,La 2 CONT bur. Pine Grove Cem., Blade, LaSalle Par., Louisiana 2 CONT 2 CONT Marie Annette Kelly Tarver was my maternal grandmother. 2 CONT 2 CONT Marie had bone cancer and her leg was removed a couple of years beforeher death. The cance 2 CONC r already had brought her much pain over severalyears before she fell from where she was ridi 2 CONC ng on the back of grandpa'sflatbed truck. Soon after the accident, the doctors took her le 2 CONC g justabove the knee. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mama, who was in the back of the truck with her mama, said her daddy wasdriving up near Manif 2 CONC est, and aunt PeeWee, who was pregnant at the time, was in the front with him. Grandma had gi 2 CONC ven PeeWee the passenger seatso she could ride more comfortably. Grandpa had built wide boar 2 CONC ds oneach side of the truck bed on which to haul his cross ties, or to letfolks sit when ridi 2 CONC ng in the back. Mama said grandma was sitting on thepassenger side, facing the front of th 2 CONC e truck, when another truck cameover the hill and grandpa had to swerve to miss the truck. T 2 CONC he suddenswerve caused grandma to fall from her perch. She lived another twoyears, but suffe 2 CONC red with a great deal of pain, both before and after herleg was amputated. The doctors treat 2 CONC ed her with morphine until her death. 2 CONT 2 CONT Written in her diary on October 19, 1956: "Friday, 1956. We quiltedagain today and Dad worke 2 CONC d on the church house. My leg hurts me tonite.Dear Lord are you going to heal me? Please gi 2 CONC ve me more faith." 2 CONT 2 CONT Although I was very young when grandma died, I can recall distinctlysitting on the bed with h 2 CONC er, in the place where her leg would have beenhad it not been amputated. Grandpa placed a st 2 CONC raight back chair upsidedown on the bed with a pillow on the chair for her to rest against an 2 CONC d Iwould sit in front of her for her to brush my hair. I recall herbraiding her own long, si 2 CONC lver hair into two braids and wrapping thebraids on her head. She had an old treadle singe 2 CONC r sewing machine in thefront bedroom of the house and the largest pine cones I've ever seen w 2 CONC erestacked on it. She hurt so badly in the months before her death that shecomplained even h 2 CONC er hair hurt her. Mama said she got so bad they had tocut her long silver hair close to he 2 CONC r head and grandma cried. 2 CONT 2 CONT Grandma and grandpa lived behind the levee in Ferriday, Concordia Par.,Louisiana, with Lake C 2 CONC oncordia almost in their backyard. We used to fishand swim there. We'd dig worms out back o 2 CONC f grandpa's house and go downto the lake to catch our supper. My older sister, Elsie, woul 2 CONC d swim fromone bank to the other ... she was about the best swimmer I've everknown. We als 2 CONC o spent a great deal of time playing on the levee. We'dtear old cardboard boxes into makeshi 2 CONC ft sleds and slide from the top downto the gravel of the road behind the levee. 2 CONT 2 CONT Marie's parents, Lizzie and John Kelly, lived further down the road fromthem, in a house wit 2 CONC h cherries on the kitchen wallpaper. We had manyfish fries up at grandma Lizzie's with famil 2 CONC y and all the folks from thechurch grandpa pastored back there. The church sat almost in gra 2 CONC ndmaLizzie's front yard. Grandpa Kelly, who was about the meanest manliving, would walk th 2 CONC e short distance down to grandma Marie's to sharetheir morning coffee on the front porch mos 2 CONC t mornings. For awhile, uncleJay and aunt PeeWee lived in a house across the street from gra 2 CONC ndma andgrandpa, and aunt Gladys and uncle Woodrow had a small trailer parked inthe yard betw 2 CONC een uncle Jay's place and grandpa's. 2 CONT 2 CONT I remember visiting once when someone brought a box of hand-me-downclothes to Patsy Joy, on 2 CONC e of aunt Gladys' girls. Patsy and I were in thetiny trailer and Patsy was trying on the dre 2 CONC sses. There was afull-length mirror attached to the door going from the living area to thebe 2 CONC droom. You had to close the door to use the mirror. Patsy had bothhands on her hips, with h 2 CONC er back to the mirror. She was turning fromside to side to see how she looked from behind i 2 CONC n the mirror. "I looklike sh#t, don't I?" she abruptly announced. Patsy is about my brother 2 CONC Adrian's age, so she couldn't have been more than six or seven at thetime. She would have go 2 CONC tten her mouth washed out with soap if anyoneother than I had heard her. We went on back t 2 CONC o the yard where she satwith her legs spread before her and filled the skirt tail of her 'new 2 CONC 'dress with dirt as we dug for worms. 2 CONT 2 CONT When I was small, daddy built a house behind the levee too. My youngestbrother, Byron, was b 2 CONC orn (at Pankey Clinic in Ferriday) while we livedback there. One of my earliest memories i 2 CONC s when Daddy found work overthe levee in Ferriday. I pulled my small red wagon, with my bott 2 CONC le andblanket, across the levee and into town looking for him. The family wasalready searchi 2 CONC ng for me when the local police brought me home. 2 CONT 2 CONT So many times I've heard one or another of my aunts or uncles say theycould not recall seein 2 CONC g Grandma Marie angry over anything. I've heardher siblings call her an angel on so many occ 2 CONC asions. She left a diary, which currently is in the keeping of her youngest daughter, Maxin 2 CONC e TarverWeatherly. I have xeroxed all the pages and hope to transcribe it. Anotation from O 2 CONC ctober 8, 1956: "... Old man Lott shot uncle Jack's cowtoday. The devil sure worked for awhi 2 CONC le. Some people sure need a lot ofgrace." [uncle Jack Matthews] That was how grandma too 2 CONC k even the worstkind of news. No doubt, she had a good heart. 2 CONT 2 CONT Grandma is buried between grandpa Johnny and her daddy, grandpa Kelly, atthe Pine Grove Cemet 2 CONC ery out at Blade (near Rhinehart) in LaSalle Parish.I've visited their graves so many times o 2 CONC ver the years.
