ELIZABETH POWELL, wife of ELIJAH L. TARVER was a daughter of Lt. JOSIAH POWELL, who was a son of JOHN POWELL, JR, and MARGARET, daughter of Capt. MICHAEL HOLT of Orange Co., NC. JOSIAH was b. 12-30-1885 and d. 12-28-1848. Thrown from a horse and killed near Natchez, Miss. buried on his homsetead in the Powell-Wicker burying ground, this place known in 1927 as the "Turner Place" near the Claussen Place and 5 miiles equidistant west of Summit in Pike County, Miss. Appointed officer in 204 Dist Militia, Elbert Co., GA, Apriil 13, 1810. First Lt. in Capt. JAMES WARE';s Co. of Infantry, 1st Reg. (HARRIS) GA. Militia August 25,1813 to March 11, 1814.

JOSIAH POWELL married 1804, JANET BRIXEY, daughter of JOHN BRIXEY, who was born in Ireland, and his wife, RACHEL MACKIE, daughter of THOMAS MACKIE of Burke Co., NC and Elbert Co., GA. JANET was born 1780 and died 10-6-1843, is buried with husband in above cemetery. Her father JOHN BRIXEY was lost at sea when on a return voyate to hisn ative Ireland, the shoip and the entire crew went down off the coaset of Georgia. [Casey, Ibid., p. 515]

JOHN POWELL and his wife, MARY, settled on 680 acres in the Alamance sector of Orange Co., NC, 1750,lived there until 1794 when he joined ELIAS and AMBROSE POWELL in Burke Co.,NC. He perhaps died soon thereafter in Burke Co.

Will of JOHN POWELL, Jr., Orange Co. NC 1802 [Bk 11, p.7] names only sons: JOSIAH, OLIVER and THOMAS and only daughters MARY, REBECCA and wife MARGARET. According to George H. Butler of Jackson, Miss, ELIZABETH POWELL, daughter of JOSIAH, said that JOSIAH's mother was a Dutch or German woman named JANE HOLT.

Will of Capt. MICHAEL HOLT, former Loyalist leader of Orange Co., NC, dated 1-25-1798, proved August 1799, names wife JEAN, daughter MARGARET POWELL, daughter ELIZABETH SMITH, daughter SARAH HARDEN, son JOSHUA HOLT, daughter MARY THOMPSON, son MICHAEL HOLT, son WILLIAM HOLT.

MICHAEL HOLT Sr, January 24, 1726, Spottsylvania Co., VA, 400 acres in the first fork of the Happidan River....Will of MICHAEL HOLT, SR, of Orange Co., Bk 1, p. 76, names wife, ELIZABETH, son PETER, son MICHAEL, and NICHOLAS HOLT, JR,m extrs, among my children not named. dated October 31, 1765.

Miss Delamar quotes Stockard's History of Alamance Co., NC, that MICHAEL HOLT Sr was a wealthy planter and married a MISS O'NEILL and had 2 sons and a dau NELLIE who married a SHOFFNER.

MICHAEL HOLT, JR., married JEAN LOCKHARD, daughter of CATHERINE LOCK- HART. There were two male LOCKHARTS in the 1778 tax list of Orange CO: WILLIAM and THOMAS. In 1790 THOMAS LOCKHART has a wife named ELIZABETH. and CATHERINE LOCKHART will dated 24 August 1785 [Will Book B, p. 194, Orange Co] names son, WILLIAM LOCKHART, daughters: CATHERINE ROADS, JEAN HOLT, SARAH PARKER, ELIZABETH MICKLEJOHN and MARY SMITH'; son-in-law, JAMES PARKER and son WILLIAM LOCKHART, extrs. Proved at November Court 1792, Orange CO. [Casey, p. 514]
