Tarver-Gen: Tarver Family Research http://www.tarver-genealogy.net/lineages/rogers/ ------------------ ROGERS: Mary Fargeson?, wife of Joseph Rogers ------------------ FARGESON Joseph Rogers was the father of Sarah Rogers, who married John Tarver of Johnston and Northampton Counties, North Carolina. Sarah's mother was Mary, family name NOT PROVEN. I have Joseph Rogers' wife as Mary FARGUSON, dau. of John FARGUSON and Ann STUBBLESON, which I've taken from published genealogies. Additonally, Mary and Joseph's son, John Rogers, was named as a grandson in John Ferguson's will (Essex Co., Va): "I do give and bequeath unto my grandson John Rogers one young cow and calf." John Fargeson's will was dated May 10, 1715 and probated Mar. 19, 1717, which places the birth of Mary and Joseph's eldest son, John, prior to that date. GILLIAM / MALONE / CLIFTON Others identify Mary, wife of Joseph Rogers, as Mary Malone or Mary Gilliam. Reasons cited for these identifications follow, and may warrant additional confirmation. 1. Connection to the Gilliam family is indicated by the use of the unusual names Isham and Drury in the family of Joseph and Mary Rogers. It is possible that Mary Rogers and Sarah Clifton were daughters of John Gilliam and wife, Sarah, of Surry Co., who had a son named Isham, and a grandson named Drury Gilliam. John Gilliam's will dated Aug. 9, 1738, mentions among other children his sons Isham and Anselm and his daughters Tabitha and Lydia. 2. The same reason is cited for linking Mary, wife of Joseph, to the Malone family. It is said that she may have been a daughter of Nathaniel Malone of Surry Co., who had a son named Drury Malone, and grandsons Isham and Drury. Nathaniel's will mentions sons Nathaniel, Drury, Thomas, William, and Daniel, a son-in-law Joseph Harper, and daughters, Amy, Mary and Phoebe. 3. Additionally, others cite family connections with Thomas Clifton as indicated by the following notations extracted from Surry Co. Order Book 1741-44: p. 176, October 19, 1743, which is on the prayer of Thomas Clifton against whom Joseph Rogers obtained a judgement in the Court in August last for Thirty pounds and his costs, etc.... Stay of execution is granted. p. 156, August 17, 1743, Joseph Rogers versus Thomas Clifton in which Clifton did not appear. p. 182, October 10, 1743, showing William Gray, Gentleman, versus Joseph Rogers, defendant.... Abates the defendant for not being an inhabitant of this county. p. 229, May 7, 1744, showing Thomas Clifton versus Joseph Rogers in chancery. 5. Thomas Clifton's wife was named Sarah, as shown by deeds in Surry Co. on January 20, 1743/44 and April 18, 1744. The above citations from the Surry County Order Book appear adversarial, and to my mind, do not necessarily indicate a familial relation. Lacking substantial proof, I base my decision upon the mention of John Rogers, grandson, in John Fargeson's will, and thus cite Mary, wife of Joseph Rogers, as the daughter of John Ferguson and Ann Stubbleson. I would welcome additional proofs or insights (for or against). Uploaded 7/31/2002 ----------- © 1997, 1999, 2002 Lotus D.
