Baptist Separatists, regulators, and Tories were moving in droves, particularly into SC's districts of Camden, Orangeburg and Ninety Six. Ninety Six is where William Lee was living. In the SC backcountry, Regulators and Regular Baptists tended to be Whigs, while those they attempted to "regulate" tended to be loyalists. In Camden and Ninety six districts, the loyalties tended to fall along neighborhood lines, thus relatives living in different neighborhoods found themselves on different sides of the war. Religious persecution drove itenerant New Lights to migrate, seeking new converts. The established, conservative churches sonsidered the New Lights rude and crass. One Anglican minister wrote that Philip Mulkey came to SC "in Rags, hungry, and barefoot" but could, "at his beck, or Nod, or Motion of his finger lead out four hundred Men into the Wilderness." These Separatists were believed to be a "disorderly bunch suffering women to pray in public, permitting every ignorant man to preach that chose, and they encouraged noise and confusion in their meetings." Anglicans also dissaproved that Separatist practices included "love feasts and annointing the sick." Around 1762, Philip Mulkey and his followers founded the first Baptist church of SC backcountry on Fairforest Creek in the Ninety Six District. The Joseph Breed that Catherine Lee married was a preacher in this bunch. Joseph Breed left Groton, CT with his parents traveling with this group of Separatist Baptists sometime after 1746 Aug. 11. Both father and son, Joseph Breed Sr and Joseph Breed Jr, were granted land lying on branches of Fairforest Creek, ranging in date from 17 June 1763 to 23 June 1774. William Lee Sr's land grant was 250 acres - possibly adjacent to the Breed land, but this needs to be plotted to be confirmed. I'm not yet sure when Wm. Lee moved his family there, but he was there on 25 Nov 1771 when he signed a land survey for James Hammet (Book 24, p.21, Grant 421). His own land grant was 20 Oct 1772. This is the land on the Tyger River that he conveys in his will to his children. William Lee's family were early members of Mulkey's church and Joseph Breed, whom Catherine married, was an Elder. The church was called Sandy Creek and I expect that is why they named their settlement and church in Mississippi Sandy Creek. I believe it is possible that we will find, if indeed William Lee first lived in Conn, that he moved with these New Light separatists. He did own a large tract of land in SC though and left descendants there, including Catherine Lee Breed's family. Joseph Breed, Catherine's husband, served as a Patriot during Revolutionary War with Col. Thomas Brandon's regiment. "Issued May 11 1786 to Joseph Breed for five pounds 14/3d1/2 Sterling for duty in Brandon's Regiment & Acct. Aud. Principal and interest." His mother, Priscilla Avery was paid for furnishing 250 pounds of beef furnished Col. Brandon's unit. After the war, Joseph and Catherine remained for a while in SC, but then began selling off the land and ultimately move into Wilkes Co., Georgia. They later move to Warren Co., Georgia where Joseph's will is dated 26 Oct 1806 and prob. 4 May 1807. : Brent H.
