Doughty ~ Collateral Lines

From the Mayflower to Catahoula & LaSalle Par., Louisiana

My interest lies with the Doughtys of LaSalle and Catahoula Parishes, Louisiana - collateral lines to families I am researching in that area.

The Doughtys of Catahoula and LaSalle Parish Louisiana are Mayflower descendants, the original immigrant being Edward Doty, who came to America in 1620 as an indentured servant with the Pilgrams on the Mayflower at Plymouth Rock.

LEVI5 DOUGHTY, the progenitor of most of the Doughty families in Louisiana, with his wife, ABIGAIL MORGAN, arrived in Louisiana about 1806, with their children.

They came from Darlington District, South Carolina, together with the Rentzs, Morgans, and Whites. From SC, they floated on flatboats down the Tennessee River, Ohio and Mississippi River to Natchez, Mississippi, from where they traveled via wagon to what is now East Feliciana Par., Louisiana.

When Levi arrived in Louisiana, he owned four slaves, five head of horses, household property, and "a large sum of money." They settled north of the Amite River between the present towns of Woodville and Chipola, Louisiana. Their marble gravemarkers indicate Levi was b. 1 March 1763 and d. 28 Appril 1854. Abigail Morgan was b. 1766 and died 17 August 1825.

In the early 1830's, Mary (Polly) Doughty, who married William Stewart, and her sister Nancy Doughty, who married Burnell Pool, came with their families from East Feliciana Parish to Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. They were daughters of Levi Doughty and Abigail Morgan. Richard Doughty and Benajah Doughty, grandsons of Levi and Abigail (sons of Reuben Doughty and Mary Reece), also moved to Catahoula Parish.

I have included here information on the first generation (Mayflower), then skipped to the generation that removed to Louisiana. See LaSalle Family History for additional details. See also the cemetery survey of Pine Grove Cemetery, Blade, LaSalle Par., Louisiana, where a number of these Doughtys and their kin are buried.

Descendants of Edward Doty

Generation No. 1

1. EDWARD1 DOTY was born 1599 in Great Britain, England, and died Aug 23, 1655 in Massachusetts. He married (1) UNKNOWN Abt. 1625. He married (2) FAITHE CLARKE Jan 6, 1633/34 in Massachusetts. She was born Jan 6, 1617/18, and died Dec 20, 1675 in Massachusetts.

Notes for EDWARD DOTY:

Edward Doty was a passenger on the Mayflower, which left Plymouth, England on September 20, 1620. He was the fortieth signer of the Mayflower Compact, executed in the cabin of the Mayflower in Cape Cod Harbor. With other members of his party, he set forth to explore the country, Dec. 6, 1620, and consequently was engaged in the first encounter recorded with the Native American Indians on December 8, 1620. He was a member of Captain Miles Standish's first military company in 1621, and again in 1643.

Edward Doty, age 20, was considered a minor when he came over on the Mayflower in the employ of Stephen Hopkins, who was a tanner. Doty had previously been apprenticed to a London tanner, and the Plymouth records list him as Hopkin's servant, which is generally read by Doughty researchers to mean apprentice. Doty's occupation later is recorded as planter, indicating he probably did not follow the tanner trade.

On 18 June 1821, Doty fought with sword and daggar the first dual recorded in New England with Edward Leister, another servant of Stephen Hopkins. Both were wounded, one in the hand and one in the thigh. The colony sentenced them to have their heads and feet tied together, and remain tied for a full day without meat or drink. They were released within an hour at Stephen Hopkins request, "upon promise of better carriage." Doty's later disputes he resolved in the civil courts, where his name often appears as both plaintiff and defendant.

Doty settled at Plymouth, Massachusetts where the oldest house is the Doty house and the oldest wharf was named Doty. In 1624 he was granted land on Watson Hill, Plymouth for a home lot. One of his first deeds on record is dated July 12, 1637, Edward Doty to Richard Derby, signed with a mark. In 1652, he was one of the purchasers of the Dartmouth tract. His many recorded transactions indicate he became a man of property.

He married his first wife (name unknown) while in his twenties. He later married sixteen year-old Faithe Clarke on January 6, 1633/34, with whom he had 11 known children. Faith was the daughter of Thurston Clarke, whose family had come from Ipswich, England on the ship Francis. Doty joined the church and was admitted a freeman before March 7, 1636-37. He wrote his will on 20 May 1655 and it was recorded upon his death at Plymouth, 23 Aug 1655. His widow, Faithe, remarried in 1667 to John Phillips.

Children of EDWARD DOTY and FAITHE CLARKE are:

  1. WILLIAM2 DOTY, b. 1635.

Notes for MARY ANN DOUGHTY:

Mary Ann Doughty was born April 30, 1839, at Pharams Bend in Catahoula Parish, as the second child to Richard Doughty and his first wife Charlotte West.

Mary Ann was married to Micajah Francis Poole on April 29, 1852, and they had two children, a set of twins. Richard Leonard Poole and Alonzo Micajah Poole were born in Pharams Bend in 1857. The twins died sometimes after 1860, and Micajah Poole, their father, died somewhere between 1860 and 1863.

At age 24, the young widow, Mary Ann Doughty, married for the second time to William H. Richey in 1863. She and William Richey had three sons: William Henderson "Bud" Richey who was born April 1, 1864, John Henry Richey who was born April 25, 1866 and George Henderson Richey who was born March 27, 1868. William Henderson Richey was married to Leona Green on May 8, 1883. John Henry Richey married Docia Miles on April 26, 1884. George Henderson Richey married Lethia Ann Valentine about 1886. Mary Ann's second husband, William Richey died somewhere between 1868 and 1873.

Widowed yet again, on February 6, 1873, Mary Ann was married for the third time to John Gaharan. They had three sons. Their eldest, Phillip Steele Garahan, was born on November 20, 1873. Their next children were another pair of twins, James Alexander Gaharan and Dennis Bernard Gaharan. They were born on July 15, 1875. Dr. Phillip Steele Garahan married Lillie May Alexander on December 27, 1899. Their son, Dr. Taliaferro Hardtner Gaharan, who practiced medicine at the Gaharan Clinic in Jena, died from a brain tumor in Feb 1969. One of the twins, Dennis Bernard Gaharan, lived to be only 6 years old and died about 1881. The other twin, James Alexander Garahan was married to Rachel Exerine Taylor on March 26, 1900. Mary Ann's third husband, John Gaharan died somewhere between 1875 and 1883.

Widowed now for the third time, Mary Ann married fourth Sam Bass, aka John Warren Robertson, on February 16, 1884. John Robertson reportedly was the infamous Sam Bass, train robber and comtemporary of Jesse James. Having been wounded in a train robbery, he escaped to the foothills of Manifest, where he met and married the widow, Mary Ann. Mary Ann lived with Sam, aka, John, as he preferred to be known, until his death on October 1, 1912. Married for 27 years, they had no children together.

Mary Ann Doughty outlived four husbands, dying on October 9, 1928 at the age of 89. She is buried at Pine Grove Cemetery in Blade, LaSalle Parish, Louisiana, under the only cedar tree in the cemetery. Blade is just out from Whitehall which is between Rhineheart and Jena.

Note: Mary Ann Doughty Robertson is buried in plot F - 085 at Pine Grove Cemetery. No other Robertsons are recorded as buried in Pine Grove. Plot F - 086 is the grave of John Henry Richey, one of Mary Ann's children by her second marriage. Plot F - 087 is the grave of Docia Miles Richey (06/14/1867 - 05/22/1944). On the other side of Mary Ann, in plot F - 084, is A. C. Zeigler. Based on the most recent complete survey of Pine Grove, John Robertson (Sam Bass) does not appear to have been buried there. See Pine Grove Cemetery survey posted here on Tarver-Gen. - ldc

Doughty Death Causes Sorrow in this Section
Death at His own Hand Coroner's Verdict on Saturday

A veil of sorrow was cast over this entire section on last Saturday night when it was learned that Chester Arthur Doughty, aged 48 years, had met death supposedly at his own hands. His untimely demise occurred shortly after midnight and it is said that he used a double barrel shotgun to affect his death, one shot taking effect in his forehead.

The accident occurred at the filling station operated by Mr. Doughty near the Jena High School building. His body was discovered by his young daughter shortly after the accident happened.

Mr. Doughty had been a lifelong resident of this section and was a member of one of the oldest and most respected families in Central Louisiana. No reason could be assigned for his actions.

For the past few years he had operated a filling station and grocery store near the school building and had made many friends throughout the city and surrounding country.

Funeral services were held at the Pine Grove Cemetery on Sunday after noon with Rev. Allbritton, of the Midway Baptist Church, officiating. The deceased is survived by two sons and four daughters, as follows: Coy Willard, Gholda, Bertie, Audie, and Mary, all of Jena.
