SAN AGUSTÍN CHURCH, LAREDO. On San Agustin Plaza in heart of old Spanish section. Originally built in 1767; the sole church in town until the late 1870s. The U.S. conquered and annexed the Rio Grande territory in 1848 and in 1850 the parish was transferred from the jurisdiction of the Mexican Diocese of Nuevo León to that of the new Texas Diocese of Galveston.
