Mama Cuca had three unions, but I have found a marriage record only for her first marriage. Possibly no marriage record will be found (per family tradition) for her other two unions, but I continue to search. Those unions were (1) Jose Refugio \Martinez\ Saenz, (2) Jose Pablo \Guerra\ Recio, and (3) Jose Vidal de Jesus \Montemayor\ Guerra. A family photograph of Ma. Refugio (an extremely pretty young woman) shows her with five children. The photo is labeled Maria del Refugio Alfrido Ratcliff Martinez Guerra Montemayor and children. My grandmother, Guadalupe, is identified as the youngest child in the family portrait, age four. The elder children include three sons and one daughter. One of the elder boys is known to be my grandmother's half-brother, Flavio Martinez, who is said to have been born October 15, 1890. Based upon the family grouping and the probable ages of the children in the photograph, Mama Cuca appears to have had 4 children by her first marriage. Only Flavio was known by our family (to my knowledge). A marriage record exist for her union with Jose Refugio Martinez, the father of my grandmother's half brother, Flavio. Marriage Record (Mex. Par. Records, ancestry.com) Date: Jan 22, 1889 Name Of Groom: Martinez, Jose Refugio Name of Bride: Alfrido, Ma. del Refugio Father of Groom: Martinez, Luis (Guerrero) Mother of Groom: Saenz, Ma. de la Merced Father of Bride: Alfrido, Daniel (Guerrero) Mother of Bride: Garcia, Rita Jurisdiction: Guerrero Mama Cuca's second union was with Jose Pablo \Guerra\ Recio. Pablo was baptised on June 23, 1867 at the Catholic Church Nuestra Senora de Agualeguas, in Agualequas, Nuevo León, Mexico. His parents were Andres Guerra and Rafaela Recio. (LDS film no. 1162847) My grandmother, Guadalupe Guerra, carried Pablo's name, but a note in our family papers by one of my aunts says: Mother was registered as Guadalupe Montemayor in Mexico, father Vidal Montemayor. I have not yet found the record. She may have been registered as Montemayor because Mama Cuca was already living with him at the time of my grandmother's birth. My grandmother always used the name Guerra and the family believes her father to be Pablo Guerra. My grandmother's date of birth was 14 August 1894, the year before her half-sister's baptism in Sabinas Hidalgo -- Elodia Montemayor. No marriage record has been found for Ma. Refugio Alfrido's union with (3) Vidal de Jesus Montemayor. Vidal was the son of Dionicio Montemayor and Lusgarda Guerra (LDS batch no. C601283). One child is known of their union. Elodia Montemayor, was born to Vidal and Mama Cuca. Elodia was baptised 05 Aug 1895, San Jose, Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Mexico, father Jose Vidal de Jesus Montemayor, mother Refugio Alfrido. My father knew Elodia and visited in her home. One of my father's sisters wrote me recently (Tue, 23 Oct 2001): Her name was Elodia, I believe, And she is Mother' half-sister. I got to know her and a daughter when they visited us in Houston in the late 40's. Charlie, YOUR Daddy visited with her from the army once. He visited her at other times, also, I believe. I think Mother also went to visit her when we lived in Houston. Elodia was younger than my grandmother, it is therefore proven the union with Vidal was Mama Cuca's third union. Elodia was raised by Vidal's family. Flavio Martinez, Guadalupe Guerra and Elodia Motemayor are the three known children of Mama Cuca, but, as I mentioned earlier, the photograph shows five children. According to aunt Mina, Mama Cuca's mother, Rita Garcia, died in childbirth when Mama Cuca and her siblings were children. (If she died with Daniel's birth, she died September 14, 1884.) Because their famly was poor, whereas his siblings were not, her dad, Daniel Alfrido, "farmed his children out" to his brother's and sisters, for whom they worked in the fields. Mama Cuca said she was made to marry Refugio Martinez at age 17 by her tios because he was from a good family. He turned out to be a poor choice as he did not work. When her dad remarried, he "got her back from her husband." Mama Cuca lived with my grandparents when my father and my tios were children. She had grown blind and my father says he often held the end of her cane to lead her to the table or elsewhere. According to him, and my aunts, she did not much like boys. She treated the girls with affection and they loved her, but she was "mean" to the boys and they did not care for her. My aunts say that Mama Cuca died May 23, 1940 in Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Texas.
